New York Blockade Leads to Natural Gas Moratorium in Westchester County

For Immediate Release:
January 18, 2019

Albany, NY – In a January 17 letter to the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC), Con Edison gave notice that it will be forced to implement a temporary moratorium on natural gas service in Westchester County because “there are gas supply constraints in this part of our service territory that limit our ability to meet customer demand on the coldest winter days.” This shortage is a direct result of the state’s blockade on natural gas and natural gas infrastructure.

“Con Edison’s moratorium on gas service in Westchester County has been a long time coming and is a sign of what’s to come from more of our state’s energy providers. This action is a direct result of the state’s continued blockade on natural gas infrastructure, which will make it harder and harder – and more and more expensive – for New Yorkers to heat their homes and run their businesses. Despite extensive efforts by Con Ed to identify non-pipeline alternatives, the reality is that additional natural gas infrastructure is needed to ensure the state’s energy needs are met,” said Peter Kauffmann, spokesman for New Yorkers for Affordable Energy. “This notice, coupled with single-digit temperatures, should be a wake-up call for Albany that if this trend continues New Yorkers will be left vulnerable and without reliable, affordable heat. Winter isn’t coming; winter is here.”
